2020 Convention Details Emerging                                                                                                                    


    The 2020 SWPC convention will be held in Wichita, KS, “The Aviation Capital of the World”, Monday, September 14, 2020, through Saturday morning, September 19, 2020.   One extra day, Friday, September 18, has been added specifically to schedule a bus tour to the Kansas Cosmosphere  International Science Center and Space Museum, in Hutchinson, KS., www.cosmo.org.

      The convention motel is the Best Western Wichita North Hotel and Suites, 915 E. 53rd St North, Wichita, KS, 67219, offering on-site Country Kitchen restaurant with free hot breakfasts, fitness center, indoor pool, guest laundry, pet-friendly, free Wi-Fi, mobility and accessible features. We are approved to bring in home-baked cookies and goodies — provided they are shared with our motel points of contact!   Please bring your favorites to share.  Door prizes including home built crafts will be on display in the convention day ready room in the motel. 

   Motel Reservations; 800-528-1234 or 316-636-9387,  www.bestwestern.com.  (Based on the note elsewhere in this Supplement, it’ll likely be cheaper to contact the hotel directly at the local number. I may be wrong, but do it. – ed.) Thirty-one rooms are blocked for Sunday, September 13 through Friday, September 18, 2020, first come first served.  Ask for the Short Wing Piper Club rate.  Room rates will be $84.99 plus state sales tax and lodging local taxes. It is recommended you make your reservations early to ensure snagging a room.  Unreserved rooms will be opened to the public after September 2.  Recommended overflow motels are:  Courtyard by Marriott Wichita East, (316)-636-4600 and Holiday Inn Wichita East (316)-686-7131.

   The convention airport is Colonel James Jabara Airport (AAO), located on the northeast corner of Wichita just outside the Dwight D. Eisenhower control zone. CTAF/UNICOM 122.7.  WX ASOS 134.025 (316-636-2541). The airport is uncontrolled. There are several other non-towered airports on the east side of Wichita so you are encouraged to use a good map/GPS reading to safely navigate into Jabara. The FBO, Midwest Corporate Aviation, 1-800-9622, www.midwestaviation.com is the full service FBO and they are very friendly and welcoming.   Transportation between Jabara airport and the Best Western motel, a distance of 7 miles, will be available.

  The EAA Chapter 88 airport clubhouse facilities comfortably seating 50-75 people indoors will be utilized throughout the convention. The Monday afternoon Meet and Greet will occur at this facility.  The clubhouse will also serve as the airport flight line hospitality facility.   Airplane parking will be close to the clubhouse and on grass. Please bring tie downs and ropes. In-the-grass camping close to the clubhouse will be allowed

      Convention details are preliminary at present.  Please monitor the SWPC web site www.shortwingpiperclub.org  as details are added, finalized and posted. 

     There are many things to see and do in Wichita. Attendees will be able to visit the following sites on their own schedules and times including but not limited to: Kansas Aviation Museum, www.kansasaviationmuseum.org, displaying 40 historical airplanes and boasting a haunted terminal; Great Plains Transportation Museum, www.gptm,us; Sedgewick County Zoo, www.scz.org; “Field Station: Dinosaurs”, theme park in Derby, KS, www.fieldstationdinosaurs.com; Museum of World Treasures, featuring Ivan the T- Rex skeleton and artifacts from around the world, www.worldtreasures.org;  Wichita Art Museum, www.wichitaartmusem.org;  Museums on the River comprised of Botanica Wichita, Exploration Place, Mid-America All-Indian Center, Old Cowtown Museum, Wichita Art Museum and Mid-America Indian heritage site with the 44-foot tall “Keeper of the Plains” statue; Wichita’s famed hardware store “The Yard” established in the late 1940 with over 4-acres of new and used bargains; several antique stores, a visit to Lindsborg, KS and last but not least, Dairy Queen.

Preliminary daily schedule:

   Monday, September 14: Arrival day.

   Monday, 1 pm: Board of Directors meeting.

   Monday, 4 pm: Meet and Greet at Jabara airport, catered by the Best Western.

   Tuesday, September 15, morning: Local tour.   If the B-29 Doc is in town we will offer a tour of her in her new museum.   If Doc will be out of town, a different tour will be scheduled.

   Tuesday, 12:00 noon: Membership Luncheon at the Best Western motel catered by the Best Western with guest speaker. 

   Tuesday 2:00 pm: Membership meeting and officer election at the Best Western motel. 

   Wednesday, September 16, morning:  SWPC technical forums at the Best Western motel.

   Wednesday, September 16, morning: available for Ladies events, possible chapter president’s breakfast.

   Wednesday, afternoon:  Open for self touring and/or airport activities.

   Wednesday, evening:  Dinner and sight seeing at Stearman Field/Benton Airpark Bar and Grill, Benton, KS.

   Thursday morning, September 17:  Fly-out/poker run from Wichita. 

   Thursday all day.  At large individual touring and/or Ladies events, to be determined. Need Volunteers to plan these events??.      

   Thursday, evening, September 17, 5:00 pm:  Cocktail hour.   6:00 pm closing banquet at the Best Western motel catered by the Best Western with speaker.   

   Friday, September 18:   Tour of the Cosmosphere International Science Center and Space Museum in Hutchinson, KS., www.cosmo.org

   Saturday, September 19:   Departure day.  Transportation to airport will be available.
