GRAYLING MICHIGAN

Grayling is in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. It’s ahhh, well look at your Michigan map and I mean take your right hand palm toward you, fingers pointed up. Now look between your second and third fingers at the same height as your baby finger. (Every Michagander carries a map with him and will be happy to show you where they live on it.) This is where Grayling is. It is located on the Au Sable River and I-75. The airport is GOV which is owned by the Michigan National Guards. This is “Up North”. It is the place Kid Rock sings about in his song, “All Summer Long”. People come here to hunt, fish, snowmobile, canoe,  and camp.

WEATHER facts about Grayling      HERE.

The airport we will use is part of Camp Grayling (147,000 acres, the largest National Guard base in the United States). The terminal building is a double wide type with kitchen, bath, and weather station. We will park our airplanes here as it is totally separated from military activities with exception of their control tower and runways. We should be able to camp here also and there is a motel right across the road for anyone who doesn’t want to be two miles away from their airplane.

Our headquarters hotel will be the Ramada Inn and Convention Center about two miles away at the other end of town. Rooms here would be less than $90 and they gave us a very good deal on meeting rooms. They have a great indoor pool / common area and their own restaurant on site plus at least one other with-in walking distance (Dead Bear Brewery) and many others around town.

MORE DETAILS

Our main outing would be to the Alpena ship wreck Museum and Glass Bottom boat “ship wreck tour.” The Guards have offered us special access to the A -10 gun and rocket range platform. No guarantee but we would hope to see some A-10’s working out as they do it most days. We could also have a canoe/kayak trip on the main branch of the Au Sable river which passes through Grayling less than a mile from our hotel
